Kashmir silk carpets are Persian knotted carpets made in the rural villages of Kashmir, Northern India. Kashmiri weaving designs are woven from classical Persian carpet designs, as is the case with this extremely fine piece – inspired from Kashan designs of Iran. Whilst in general Kashmiri carpets are considered to be fine they can however vary in quality from reasonably well knotted with approx. 200 knots per square inch to the very fine high quality pieces which can have circa 500 knots per square inch, often cut with a low pile and a striking iridescent luster as a result of the light refracting from the silk. Given the fine knotting involved and the natural durability of silk these make excellent carpets for high foot traffic areas.
